What to Do After Clicking a Suspicious Email

Basic steps to take after opening or clicking a suspicious email.

A suspicious email can lead to account theft or malware. Some messages also open fake login pages that copy passwords.

After clicking a suspicious email, do not enter more passwords. Do not download more files from the message. Do not keep using links from the email.

Change the password from a safe device

If a password was entered, change it from a trusted device. Turn on two-factor authentication if the account supports it.

Check the account for anything strange

Check the account for email forwarding rules. Review recovery email settings. Look for sent messages or login alerts that are not recognized.

Email accounts used for banking or work should be checked quickly after suspicious activity. The same applies to accounts used for shopping or important records.

Have the computer checked

If a file was downloaded or installed, the computer should be checked. Malware and unwanted software can change browser settings or run in the background.
